The behaviour of budgies and their take to living with their budgie friends.
Friendship is just as in important issue in the animal kingdom as with humans,
which can also mean that, just like us, if a budgie doesn’t get along with one of its lodgers,
all hell can break loose, so it’s worth taking things slowly
and getting them to happily live with a companion.
If you have several females and decide to try them living all together,
then I would urge great caution and keep your eyes peeled! If they decide that
they don’t like each other, then they could cause a lot of serious damage to one another.
One way to tackle this is by keeping an even number of male and female budgies in the same
aviary if you have to have females living together. Males on the other hand get on with each
other with much less resistance. They are mellow birds and will adapt to the situation very
quickly and get on with no problems what so ever. Whatever you decide, it has recently been
agreed in modern literature that a budgie does in fact need company.
If kept single, it is though that it potentially, could cause serious psychological
and physical damage to the bird. If you put in all the hours that you can,
a budgie can be tamed relatively easily, which should make introducing
a companion much easier if they have not grown up with one.
As budgies naturally live in flocks, getting them to co-habit shouldn’t be too much of a problem really.
When introducing a friend for your budgie, it’s a good idea to get the additional member as young as you can.
Start them off in separate cages near to each other so they can get used to each other from a distance.
This way the birds will learn to trust each other with out feeling they have to fight for territory.
When they are visibly at ease with one another, open their cages and let them mingle with the option
of going back to their cage if they want to. As they get more comfortable,
get a bigger cage with two of everything (food bowls, cuttlebones etc)
so there is no reason to fight and they should naturally form a flock and be
happy living with each other – birds of a feather stick together after all!
All of you that already own budgies, I’m sure will agree, that each bird has
its own way of behaving – no two are alike as far as personality and attitude go.
One may love to be handled as much as you are prepared to do it,
whereas another may be a little touchier and only want to be handled when he decides its ok.
Some will love to play with any toy you supply to them, some will enjoy listening to a bit
of music and some will show favouritism to certain toys, songs and even items of clothing that you wear.
Individuality most certainly will show with your budgies!
