The Budgie Lifespan

Considering the maximum expected lifespan of a species of bird before purchase is an important thing. Some species have an exceptionally long life, in which case you have to consider what will become of the bird if it should outlive you and make appropriate arrangements for your pets continued care.

With budgies, if their diet, environment and amount of exercise taken remain perfect you can expect about a 10 to 12 year lifespan. Of course this is not a guarantee. Accidents do happen and there is always the possibility of health problems along the way. Realistically though, given that life is rarely perfect, most budgies only live for 5 to 10 years. Budgies are prone to becoming over-weight, particularly if their wings are clipped so as to restrict flight, which is of course the best form of exercise for them. Birds are ‘designed’ to fly, it’s what they do. To prevent budgies with bulging bellies, it is best to keep things like sprey millet and assorted seed treats, as a treat. In fact, for a budgie that doesn’t get much exercise, I’d recommend only giving treats once every ten to fourteen days. Make sure that you don’t forget to ‘bird proof’ your home before they are allowed out of the cage.

Even things like vases can be dangerous. They shouldn’t be able to escape through open windows or doors, or have access to cables. Common sense is essential here, as I’m sure your budgies safety is important to any owner. Check EVERYTHING just to make sure they can come to no harm. If your budgie doesn’t get enough exercise their inner organs can become fatty, which can lead to them failing. In a worst case scenario the internal organs can stop working suddenly, without any warning signs at all. Most over-weight budgies suffer from a kind of fatty tumour called lipoma that develops and grows between the skin and the muscles. Statistics show that 50% of budgies do not make it to their 5th birthday on account of incorrect environment and bad diet. So make sure your little friend has a good, nutritious diet, but is not over-fed, give fresh fruit and vegetables every day (persist if they try to resist their greens). I do stress the fresh bit, along with the seed mix you give them, change the fruit and veg offered daily, as ‘off’ produce can play havoc with their digestive system. Vitamin supplements can be given too and you can pick these up from any good pet shop (but follow the instructions carefully).

Last but not least – water. Fresh water daily must be given (make sure that it is not below the seeds to avoid floaters!). This diet should keep them healthy and improve their lifespan. The opportunity, with encouragement if the bird is reluctant, to take plenty of healthy exercise is equally important.

So try your best with keeping your budgie happy and healthy so they enjoy their lifespan. If you keep to the general rules of thumb, then they will love you no matter how old they get.
