Welcome to ukbudgies

Breeder of beautiful budgies in Essex

This is one I made earlier….

>I would make a safe bet that at some time or another we have all watched a programme like ‘Blue Peter’ and heard the illusive catch phrase “…and here’s one that I made earlier.” So, who would like to be able to make like one of those presenters and turn out some nifty things for your budgie’s that are practical, cheap and will be much appreciated by them?!

Right folks, here’s how to go about making a suitable substitute for a hospital box;

Firstly, you will need either a plastic hamster box or a small fish tank and purchase a small heater that would go in an aquarium.

Then you need to fill a large jar (a coffee jar or the likes) with water.

Make a hole in the lid that will allow the cable to pass through and put the heater in the jar.

Then it’s best to line the tank with newspaper and put a small jam jar of seed in the corner as a make shift feeder.

Finally, plug the heater in and secure the lid on the jar.

Make sure that the heat is appropriate and not to hot or cold – you can adjust the heat accordingly.

This will do well as a quick hospital cage if ever you are caught without the cage but with the need for one. This way, the small chick (who may have been abandoned for example) or sick budgie can be placed in the tank and either cuddle up to the heated jar or move away to whatever distance and heat is right for them at the time. It is very easy to keep this one clean (remember to keep the newspaper that’s lining the tank clean and changed regularly as a poorly budgie won’t want to be lying in yucky, dirty paper). If you opted for the hamster box transformation, then this one is pretty light to move around to.

How about a useful alternative for perches? A must have in any cage or aviary as I’m sure any breeder or pet owner would echo – you simply MUST have perches, it’s non negotiable. So what if you suddenly find that your usual perches are breaking easily and you need a quick replacement. Yeah, you can use branches or keep a stock of concrete perches (that take much longer to wear out and have the added advantage of being a natural toenail file and beak buffer – great!) but I have two words for you…broom handle. Yes, that’s right – if you’re ever stuck for a perch, just grab yourself an old wooden broom handle (or similar as they are made of a reasonably hard wood so will take a good bit of gnawing before needing replacement) and it will make a great perch substitute! It could even be worth asking at your local shop that sells these for any broom handles they may have out back that were slightly damaged as you will be able to use them and will get them at a marked down price – there’s no harm in asking!
