Are Fruit and Vegetables Necessary for your Budgie?

In a word - yes. Fresh fruit and vegetables need to be supplemented daily for your budgie to have a well rounded and healthy diet. Budgies that live off of an all seed diet, unfortunately end up being either overweight, unhealthy or both.
Here are some options to try in the vegetable groups:

Celery, lettuce (a handy little tip is to make sure - as there's not really that much goodness - that’s you only provide lettuce in small amounts and only occasionally), bok choy, peas, carrot (either chopped or grated will be fine), chard, broccoli, silver beet, zucchini, sweet corn, watercress and spinach. Our little budgie friends tend to hanker their preferences towards carrot, sweet corn, silver beet and sweet corn - yum!

Plants are too an option to feed your budgie, have a go with providing dandelion, chickweed and clover and see what they think of it. I'm sure it will be a hit!

These are some great fruit options to give your budgie, go ahead and give them a try

Guava, mango, watermelon, apple, grape, strawberry, tangerine, nectarine, orange, plum, kiwi fruit, peach, orange, pear, pomegranate and melon. If you could ask them and get an answer, they would probably ask for apple first - they love it!

Some important preparation advice for the vegetables and fruit

Make sure it's all fresh! This will be the most nutritious for them. Alternatively (if you find yourself caught short) you can give them frozen (but defrosted, obviously) or canned until you get to the shops.

Give them raw - but keep in mind that some budgies will appreciate things like peas and sweet corn being cooked first, only you can decide what your budgie will think about that one…trial and error I think they call it!)

Give the fruit and vegetables a good wash before serving and leave the peel on as there are a lot of nutrients in the peel.

Try and make sure that they are at room temperature (not too cold or it could effect their digestive system which could lead to them being a little bit poorly for a few days – best to be avoided and keep them happy and healthy)

Serve up in small pieces with all pips, seeds, cores and stones removed first.

As you may have guessed, there will be a change in budgies droppings when fruit and vegetables are a part of their daily diet - this is normal! It tends to get a little runnier, so don’t panic and rush them off to the vet – it’s just the fruit. Another thing to keep in mind is that some budgies will turn their beaks up at veggies and fruit (sometimes for up to a year!) but to keep on trying...they will eventually eat it if provided daily with fresh produce. It is very important for a healthy living for them and as soon as they give in they will realise that they love it.
