Food for your Feathered Friends – What would be Birdie ‘A La Carte’?

Now, we all want a healthy and contented budgie, and alike humans, a healthy diet plays a very big part in this! Coupled with the correct exercise (which is a whole different story) it’s simply a must do.

Firstly, it’s a ‘no-brainer’ to make sure that you provide your budgie with a good quality seed mix suitable for budgies. This is not difficult or hard to find as it is readily available in most supermarkets and pet stores (all mixed up and ready for distribution – perfect!). One helpful pointer when buying these ready made seed mixes though; make sure that there is not an over whelming percentage of the feed made up of hulled oats as these are fattening for your budgie (whereas they will be pleased and grateful for the food, I’m sure they would still like to be able to have a fly). Also, it’s a good idea to buy your seed in relatively small, fresher packs instead of in bulk. That really is option A, you could (which would be option B, no less) offer your budgie a pellet diet and see how that works out.

It is important to supplement your budgies seed or pellet diet with fresh vegetables and fruit, so don’t forget them! And I’d like to stress the point that it has to be FRESH as any refused and left in the cage for the next day could cause a problem with your budgies tummy. For the sake of 10 minutes changing the veg’ and fruit over, it’s not worth potentially giving your budgie and health problems.

Now for the treats; just like us, they enjoy them too and, again, just like us, they are to be given in moderation as they can be fattening if given too frequently. You can have too much of a good thing rings all too true. For treating occasions, they love spray mullet and other seed treats such as honey bells and sticks. Pet budgies can become easily overweight, so please spread out when you give these treats! For an active budgie, I’d recommend a mullet spray once a week or so but ultimately – that’s for the owner to decide.

Fresh water is very important and should be presented daily. Drum it into your routine to change that water every single day! Cuttlebone along with calcium, iodine and mineral blocks need to be given too. Either once a week or fortnight, it’s a good idea to add a drop or two of vitamin supplement to the drinking water (but take care not to leave it down too long as bacteria can quickly spread). Alternatively, you can sprinkle vitamin supplements onto moist food (apple for example) but it is very important to follow the instructions on the packet very carefully and not to exceed any of the stated doses.

All that’s left to say now is ‘bon appetite’ budgies, I’m sure your owners will prove to be master chefs!
