Disease and illness page

Hello and welcome to ukbudgies Disease and illness page!

Imformation on all the types of diseases and illness that budgies
can get are listed Below

BUDGIE DISEASES.

Just like every body else, the budgerigar is susceptible to a few ailments and upsets, some easy to cure, and some a little more serious. Here, I've listed and explained the aforementioned with the appropriate treatments. I hope they will be of some assistance.

EGG BINDING.

This problem is only seen in hens (for obvious reasons!) and the main reason for this happening, is when budgies are mated at the wrong time of year (usually around January and February when the days and nights are particularly cold. Prevention of this is much, much easier than cure, so by adding one teaspoon of cod liver oil to a cup full of seed should prevent this nasty and dangerous ailment. The cure to egg binding is heat and should be administered in one of two ways. The preferable way to heat is by using a 'hospital cage', reason being that in a hospital cage, the heat can be altered as and when it is needed, so it's much easier to keep a close eye on your birds recovery. Alternatively, you should put your budgie in a cage near a fire (or alternative source of heat). In the case of an emergency, you should wrap your budgie in a warm towel and hold them near a fire, then when they have recovered a little, you can put them in their cage and keep that by the fire too and just leave the budgie alone. The egg will then most probably be laid.

ENTERITIA

The tell tale signs of Enteritia are an unusually level of disinterest and tameness (the birds head tucked under its wing with its feathers fluffed up) accompanied by Diarrhea. This needs to be sorted out immediately, as ignoring Enteritia can be fatal. It is cause by not feeding your budgie correctly with the right foods, but instead letting them eat 'junk food' e.g. cake, potato and other such foods that are particularly sugary and starchy. The result of which causes the liver to run down and causes Diarrhea. The way to remedy Enteritia is by covering three sides of your budgies cage and giving them heat and warmth. You should sit your budgies cage in front of the fire with the open side facing the fire and by letting the bird rest. This alone will make the world of difference, and by sprinkling powdered Bismuth Carbonate over the budgie's seed (making sure that you feed your ill budgie easily digestible seed like mullet spray seeds). The Bismuth Carbonate and heat will cure the Enteritia.

FITS

The main cause of fitting in budgies is the very warm weather. If your budgies cage is left in a spot where is cannot escape the hot sun shine (for example a window in the peak of summer) there is a high likelihood of them fitting. In all honesty, it’s much kinder to prevent this from happening than having to go through the cure. By simply making sure that your budgie is kept in a light place, but out of the sun, this should stop fitting from happening, it's as easy as that! But, if a fit happens then the way to cure it is by covering the budgies cage with a dark cloth and leaving the bird in the quiet to recover. Any loud, sudden noises or movements should be avoided at all costs and after a few hours, you should be able to start removing the cover (a little at first) and then finally taking it off the cage completely.

OVERGROWN CLAWS AND BEAK.

This can quite simply be sorted out by clipping them down with a (snap) nail clipper. It's much easier to be sure to clip your budgies more often and take off less per time, than only when it's obviously time for a clipping and risking taking off too much. You need to be VERY careful not to cut the claws or beak too short.
